Nakshatra Compatibility (Guna Milan)
Marriage compatibility from birth stars — the traditional Ashtakoota guna milan, out of 36.
Pick each partner’s birth nakshatra and pada; this tool scores the eight kootas (Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi) for a total out of 36, and flags doshas. 18+ is acceptable.
Nakshatra matching calculator
Pick the birth nakshatra and pada for each partner. The moon sign (rashi) is derived from the nakshatra and pada.
How guna milan works
In Vedic matchmaking, the couple’s birth nakshatras and moon signs are compared across eight kootas whose points add up to 36. More gunas indicate greater compatibility, and 18 or above is traditionally acceptable.
| Koota (max points) | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Varna (1) | Spiritual compatibility and ego balance; the boy’s varna should equal or exceed the girl’s. |
| Vashya (2) | Mutual attraction and control, from each moon sign’s vashya group. |
| Tara (3) | Health and fortune; the birth stars are counted from each other for an auspicious tara. |
| Yoni (4) | Physical and intimate compatibility, from each nakshatra’s animal symbol (yoni). |
| Graha Maitri (5) | Mental and intellectual bond, from the friendship of the two sign lords. |
| Gana (6) | Temperament — the match of Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa ganas. |
| Bhakoot (7) | Love, prosperity and family wellbeing, from moon-sign position; 6-8, 5-9, 2-12 are inauspicious. |
| Nadi (8) | Health and progeny; the same nadi is considered a dosha. |
Nadi and Bhakoot dosha
Two kootas carry special weight. The same nadi creates Nadi dosha (linked to health and progeny), and moon signs falling 6-8, 5-9 or 2-12 apart create Bhakoot dosha. Even with a high total, it is wise to consult an astrologer on these — tradition also prescribes remedies.
This tool counts only the Ashtakoota gunas. Manglik (Mangal) dosha, lagna matching and dasha analysis are not included; before any marriage decision, have the full horoscopes matched by a qualified pandit or astrologer.
Common questions
What guna milan score is considered good?
18 or more out of 36 is traditionally acceptable for marriage; above 25 is good. Below 18 is generally not recommended — but Nadi/Bhakoot dosha and Manglik status are also weighed.
What is Nadi dosha?
When both partners share the same nadi, the 8 Nadi points become zero — considered serious for health and progeny, though exceptions and remedies exist.
Is guna milan alone enough?
No. It is one traditional tool; Manglik dosha, lagna, dashas and the full horoscope also matter. Take the final decision with a qualified astrologer.
How is the rashi determined?
Each nakshatra spans 13°20′ in four padas; the nakshatra and pada fix the moon sign, which this calculator derives automatically.
Which method is this based on?
The North-Indian Ashtakoota (Parashari) system — eight kootas totalling 36 gunas. Yoni and Vashya gradations can vary slightly by tradition.
