The seven vaaras and their planets
The vaara is simply the weekday — but in the Hindu calendar each of the seven days is governed by one of the seven classical planets (grahas), and this rulership colours the whole day. Sunday belongs to the Sun, Monday to the Moon, Tuesday to Mars, Wednesday to Mercury, Thursday to Jupiter, Friday to Venus and Saturday to Saturn. In panchang terms the vaara runs sunrise to sunrise, not midnight to midnight.
Each day carries the nature of its planet: Monday is gentle and devotional (Shiva/Chandra), Tuesday energetic and protective (Hanuman/Mangal), Thursday wise and auspicious (Guru/Vishnu), Saturday disciplined and karmic (Shani). This is why particular vrats, worship, colours and kinds of work are matched to particular days — and why the weekday also fixes the day's inauspicious windows, since Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika are each assigned to a day-part by vaara.
