Annaprashan Muhurat अन्नप्राशन मुहूर्त
Choosing an auspicious day for a baby’s first solid food
An annaprashan muhurat is the auspicious time for a baby’s first taste of solid food (Annaprashan sanskar). It is traditionally held around the sixth month, on a favourable nakshatra and tithi, avoiding the birth star and inauspicious periods.
When it is done
Annaprashan is classically done in the sixth month for boys and an even month (sixth or eighth) for girls, after the baby can sit and the first teeth appear. Family custom varies.
Auspicious timings at a glance
| Good months | The month of the ceremony follows the baby’s age; a favourable day is chosen within it |
| Good nakshatras | Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha and Revati |
| Good tithis | Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi and Trayodashi |
| Good weekdays | Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday |
Periods to avoid
The baby’s birth nakshatra and birth month, Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi), Amavasya, eclipse days, and usually Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday.
How the muhurat is chosen
- Confirm the baby’s age suits the traditional window (around the sixth month) and the baby can sit.
- Choose a favourable nakshatra and tithi that is not the birth star.
- Avoid Rikta tithis, Amavasya and eclipse days.
- On the day, feed the first morsel in an auspicious choghadiya or the Abhijit Muhurat, avoiding Rahu Kaal.
Important: This is general guidance, not a personalised muhurat. Fix the final date with a qualified pandit considering the horoscopes and regional tradition. To check the choghadiya and Rahu Kaal on a shortlisted date, use the muhurat planner.
